The team faced quite a few challenges, but persevered through the semifinals of the tournament.
Located at Van Horn High School in Independence, Missouri, the Kansas City Cup Tournament is an important tournament for KC schools to showcase their skill against others not located in their class. Schools from all across the metro attend the tournament, making for nail-biting competition and incredible stories.
This year, the girls soccer team played a total of three games at Van Horn, some of which were blowouts and others, which were much, much closer in score.
To start off the tournament, the girls breezed through an easy 8-0 win against Northeast KC. The team scored all 8 goals in the first 18 minutes, leading to the invocation of the mercy rule after the first half was finished.
Next, the team faced the Raytown South Cardinals. While the game was closer in score, the girls still won comfortably, with the final score at 3-0. Goal scorers included Sophie Brous ‘23, Lasya Maganti ‘24, and team captain Bella Kateusz ‘23.
Now, with the team at the top of their group, they faced William Chrisman High School in the semifinals. Sydney Georgie ‘25 scored early at the 15 minute mark, but a late-half equalizer put the game tied during halftime.
The game continued past regulation into double overtime and eventually penalties, where William Chrisman took the win.
Emotions ran especially high at the game, due to its make-or-break nature and the loud voices of the players and fans in the stands.
Even though the Knights lost, Coach Huppe still described the game as “their best the whole season.” The passion shown on the field was palpable, evident in the players’ searing counterattacks, tackles, and overall drive to win.
Girls soccer continues its season, with varsity playing at Maranatha today. Be sure to come out!
