Girls Golf Started Small, But Ended Big

Barstow Girls Golf has wrapped up another successful season, ending their season with a placement at Districts despite only having four members on the team. While that may seem a tiny team to most, it has doubled in size from last season.

Sophia Chow ‘24 explains how the team has grown, saying, “Last year there were only 2 members, but this year, since we have more, we can enroll in more tournaments.”

Captain Izzi Osman ‘24 was the only returning member of the girls golf team. As such, it was up to Osman to step up and lead. Her hard work and dedication earned her the team’s placement at Districts this year.

“…the season went pretty great,” according to Osman. “I came in with multiple match wins as well as a top 10 finish in a tournament.”

There were many other highlights to the season as well. Isabell Kuti ‘24 expands on her favorite part, saying, “Practicing at Minor Park was always fun because we all talked while hitting balls.”

In order to improve as much as possible, the team rigorously practiced four days a week. Chow explains, “On Mondays and Tuesdays we go to the range and hit until 5:00 pm, and on Wednesdays and Thursdays we go to nine holes.”

The first tournament they attended was the Lawson Girls Golf Invitational at Hidden Valley Golf Course on September 9, where Osman placed 8th. Osman enjoyed the tournament, aside from the weather, saying, “It was a really hot season.”

Next, the team made its way to Shirkey Golf Course for the Richmond Tournament, followed by a Dual vs St. Teresa’s at the Fred Arbanas Golf Course. They won the tournament 180-184, where Osman was the match medalist with a score of 34. Kuti followed close behind with 45, Chow with 48, and Bibi Nin ’27 with 53.

They then competed in a trimatch with Pembroke Hill at Minor Park Golf Course, where Nin reflected on the team as a whole. “Since it is small, it is a close and good community, where you are not pressured to win,” she says.

The four students then moved on to participate in the Dual with Odessa at Minor Park Golf Course, where Osman won the entire tournament with a score of 48.

Then, Osman traveled to Districts, which took place at the Plattsburgh Country Club. She placed 35th overall, concluding the team’s strong season.

Looking back on the season, Osman explains that there “was a lot of growth throughout the team.”

Kuti adds to this, saying, “Each person got into their groove after the first match. We all had to figure out how everything worked.”

While the season may have concluded, the relationships forged between team members will continue to grow. Nin says, “It’s nerve-wracking to be a freshman, but everyone is nice and helps [me] out.”

Chow agrees, saying, “Since the beginning of the season, we have really connected and communicate more now. At the beginning of the season, we didn’t all know each other super close but I feel as the season drew on we got to know each other better and we now talk if we run into each other in the halls.”

So come on Barstow, let’s go golfing!
