Barstow MS Students Honored at Awards Night

The middle school awards night is highly anticipated.

The middle school awards night is an annual event that takes place every year on the last day of the school year. It showcases the talent, hard work, and true characters of the Barstow middle school. Each year, there are 5 awards given.

The Patti Award (the Headmaster’s Achievement Award) is given to one student in each grade from kindergarten all the way up to 12th grade. It is given because of the student’s effort, achievement, and performance. “Last year, Apollo Fernandez (‘28) and I got it,” says Kinley Krantz (‘28). Krantz (‘28) speculates, “This year I think maybe Madeline Johnson (‘28) could get it.

The Academic Knight Award is given to students who demonstrate an extraordinary work ethic the entire school year. It’s not so much about grades, but more about the students’ achievements academically throughout the year. Shreeya Iyer (‘28), Helena Klohs (‘28), Any Stanojevic (‘28), and Adit Reddy (‘28) were given this award last year. Lilly Simpson (‘28) says “I think that John McKinney (‘28) could get the award.”

The citizenship awards are given to students with a positive attitude towards peers, the school, and their communities. The recipient possesses strong character, courage, and sets a good example. The recipients last year were Caroline Williams (‘28) and Will Roberts (‘28). Kinley (‘28) thinks that Madison Brox (‘28) could get it this year.

The Matt Gannon Investment and Involvement Award is presented to students that apply themselves in a variety of school activities outside of the classroom, like the stage, field, at a podium, or the community. Last year’s winners were Lilly Simpson (‘28) and Deuce Chanos (‘28). Simpson (‘28), a past winner, thinks that Dior Dunn (‘28) may receive it this year.

The Mallory Hilvitz Spirit of Creativity Award is presented to students who, like Mallory, have a love of learning new things, and a passion for individuality and creativity. It contributes to positive community building. This will be the first year since Mrs. Hilvitz’s retirement that the award is given. Both Kinley (‘28) and Lilly (‘28) agree that Danica Hartong (‘28) is a front-runner this year.

The Middle School Awards Night is an important event for the Barstow community. Be sure to come and show your support to the middle school award recipients on Friday, May 12th!
