Accumulating over $155 million in its opening weekend, Greta Gerwig’s Barbie has proved to be a sensational and record-breaking movie. The motion picture’s popularity has only risen since its release in July and changed many individuals’ perceptions of the Barbie toy franchise.

The film dives into the utopian-esque Barbie Land, where Stereotypical Barbie, played by Margot Robbie, finds flaws in her seemingly perfect world. Both she and Ken (Ryan Gosling) journey to the real world and discover the imperfect aspects of reality, all while attempting to find their own identities. In this journey, Barbie redefines the meaning of womanhood by highlighting the importance of self-love, resilience, and genuine friendships.

Many who watched the film dressed according to the pink Barbie theme, one of which was Simran Mohan ‘26. She expressed how the motion picture exceeded her expectations.

“I went into the movie expecting a typical light-hearted movie, but I came out a changed person,” said Mohan. “My favorite part of [Barbie] is when Stereotypical Barbie realizes she is more than just a doll and has a better purpose.”

Mohan also disclosed how the film’s moral messages are powerful takeaways, bringing significant meaning to the franchise, “I think that the powerful messages of the movie are important, especially to the younger audiences who have watched the movie. I feel like they can understand the experiences and representation, through both sides of a matriarchy and patriarchy.”

Mariya Khan ‘26 shared a similar opinion to Mohan. “I didn’t expect the movie to play out the way it did,” explained Khan. The film differed from other Greta Gerwig movies with its light-hearted tone, contradicting film style, and sarcasm. “I connected with the modern humor used and the live-action Barbie had emotions and imperfections, which was different from the movies I grew up watching.”

Ms. Lea pondered the variety of Barbies in the film, such as the Weird Barbie, “I think for [Weird Barbie], I liked her for what she stood for because even though she was an outcast, she still helped the other Barbies with their issues.” As explained, Weird Barbie is a character featured in the movie who supports stereotypical Barbie in her quest to save Barbie Land; this character had a major impact on the Barbie movie’s ending.

Ms. Lea, as an art teacher, also recognizes the efforts made in producing the motion picture, “[The producers] made an effort to be more inclusive, such as having a transgender actress, which I appreciate.” She brought to light how Mattel, the company that owns the Barbie franchise, had to accept the movie, “I have more appreciation for the movie because Mattel had to go along and approve [Barbie]. It makes me respect the brand a little more.”

Director Greta Gerwig has masterfully brought to life the uplifting themes of Barbie, weaving in an entertaining yet meaningful message throughout the film. What truly set this marvel apart for me was its attention to detail; every aspect, from the set designs to the meticulously curated outfits, transported viewers to the enchanting realm of Barbie Land, straight from their imagination.

The attire worn by Stereotypical Barbie not only mirrored her character but also showcased an exuberant journey through various styles. One set design, with its inclusion of multiple dollhouses for the Barbies, unmistakably reflected the intricate and immersive world of the dolls. These details significantly enhanced the allure of Barbie, adding depth and complexity, much like the layers of an onion.

The Barbie soundtrack, featuring an array of award-winning artists including Dua Lipa, Billie Eilish, Nicki Minaj, and others, deserves a special mention. Multiple songs in the soundtrack resonate with the film’s exploration of womanhood, none more so than the emotionally charged track “What Was I Made For?” which left me in tears.

Furthermore, the cinematography of Barbie is breathtaking, adding an extra layer of magic to a memorable experience. I feel this film has surpassed other movies released in 2023 for how it evoked deep sentiments from my childhood.

Ultimately, Barbie continues to represent the pursuit of imagination, remaining an inspiration to those of all ages.
