After working diligently in their foreign language classes, more than 25 students were inducted into the language honor societies.
Currently, Barstow offers three world languages: Chinese, French, and Spanish. Each of these languages honors those who have been diligent in learning their language with induction to language honor societies. Often these accolades are put on resumes and college applications, and allows inductees to wear special cords during graduation.
First, new members of the Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica (National Spanish Honor Society) were inducted. Previously inducted members of the society spoke before welcoming the new students to the front of Price Hall. 20 new students were inducted into the society, one of the highest numbers in the last few years.
Each student received a red carnation in their left hand, as well as a candle, which they lit and held in their right. Then, the readers continued with a Spanish poem and, of course, the oath for the Marco Denevi chapter of the honor society.
Students repeated after junior Sophia Chow ‘24 before blowing out their candles, signifying their entry into the honor society. Much to the delight of the audience filled with families and friends, the students then danced off the stage to Juanes’s “A Dios Le Pido.”
Next, four students were inducted into the French National Honor Society. Similar to the Spanish ceremony, students were called onto stage and given a candle. Seniors Ahna Chang and Genevieve Hyatt ‘23 read an excerpt from Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, the author of the “Little Prince,” before junior Izzy Parr read the oath.
The new inductees lit their candles in tandem, which represented the strength and spirit of the society flowing from previous generations to their own. After they repeated the oath, the four new inductees returned to their seats.
Finally, new inductees of the Chinese Honor Society were welcomed onto the stage. The three new members were also given a candle before Chinese Honor Society Secretary, Max Moore ‘24, read an excerpt from famous philosopher Lao Tzu’s teachings.
Hyatt and Allison Brodrick ‘23 both read the oath and welcomed new students into the society. As they walked off stage, the students sang Kan Guo Lai by Richie Jen.
All of us at B-line are very proud of the new inductees, and cannot wait to see how each society will fill their role at Barstow.
