2022 was a big year for the music industry. Around 140 million songs were released this year, and some of those songs made Spotify’s top list. To start off 2023, here are the top songs from December 2022 on Spotify.
The top song is “Anti- Hero” by Taylor Swift. Although her new album with this song got released in mid-December, “Anti-Hero” quickly climbed the charts. Next in the second place spot is “As It Was” by Harry Styles, which is surprising, because this song is a summer song rather than a winter one. In third place is SZA’s debut song for her new album SOS, “Blind.” The song that claimed fourth place was “I Ain’t Worried” by OneRepublic. This one is relatively old, but still catchy. Last but not least is a TikTok crazy song, “Bad Habit” by Steve Lacy.
Barstow students didn’t necessarily agree with the Spotify rankings.
Seventh graders Elle Losse and Lilly Simpson are big SZA fans, so they said “Blind” by SZA. Emilia Prior (‘27) is a Swiftie, so she said “Anti-Hero” by Taylor Swift.
Simpson (‘28) likes SZA, but doesn’t like Taylor Swift. She would have ranked the top songs: “Blind,” “Bad Habit,” “As It Was,” “I Ain’t Worried,” and “Anti-Hero.” Despite it coming in at number three on her list, Simpson (‘28) also added that she thought “As It Was” was a bit underrated. She thought “Anti-Hero” was a bit overrated.
Losse (‘28) is both a SZA fan and Taylor Swift fan. She would have ranked the top songs as “Blind,” “Bad Habit,” “Anti-Hero,” “As It Was,” “I Ain’t Worried.” Losse (‘28) also agreed that “As It Was” was an underrated hit, though she thought “Bad Habit” was the overrated chart-topper.
An avid Swiftie, Prior ‘27 would still have ranked the songs differently than they appeared on the Spotify charts: “Anti-Hero,” “Blind,” “Bad Habit,” “As It Was,” “I Ain’t Worried.” Prior ‘27 added that she thought “Blind” was a bit underrated while “As It Was” was a bit overrated.
Each student also had a song they thought should have been at the top. All of the songs chosen were by SZA. Simpson (‘28) said, “‘Kill Bill’ deserves to be on this list because it is one of the best songs from her new album.” Prior (‘27), agreed, but Losse (‘28) said, “ I think ‘Low’ deserves to because it is better than both ‘Kill Bill’ and ‘Blind’.”
As for runner ups, the songs were “Calm Down” by Selena Gomez, “Mockingbird” by Eminem, “I’m Good (Blue)” by David Guetta and BEbe Rexha), “Unholy” by Sam Smith and Kim Petras, and “2 Be Loved (Am I Ready)” by Lizzo.
None of the students had heard all of the songs on the runner-ups list. Losse (‘28) commented, “I’ve heard parts of some of these songs on TikTok.” Simpson (‘28) agreed, “Yeah, me too. I just haven’t heard a lot of them fully.”
They all chose “2 Be Loved (Am I Ready)” as their top choice of the runner-ups, and all agreed that “Unholy” didn’t deserve its runner-up spot. Prior (‘27) added that “I’m Good (Blue)” was “too old and overrated.”
Overall, the song choices were pretty solid, but there are so many songs that could deserve to be on this list. Which songs do you think deserve to be in the Top Spotify Songs of December 2022?
