Taking the Sophomore Research Project to the next level…
The sophomore class visited the National World War 1 Museum in Kansas City to support their major projects.
As students arrived, the first thing that caught their eyes was the tall monument. Students walk down the stairs towards the entrance, which features a futuristic building in a somewhat underground location. Inside the museum, there are intricate designs, thoughtful and creative memorials, and a large interior.
The sophomores start off their visit by watching a short overview of what led up to, and what occurred in the First World War. Once they finished this documentary, they broke up into groups of three, roaming around the museum and answering questions on a provided sheet. There were many interesting artifacts and real soldier stories preserved in the museum.
Life-like mannequin scenes told stories that could not be understood any other way. “It helped convey that it was a real-life thing,” Charlotte Turner ‘27 says.
Kansas City’s WWI Museum even opened a 100-year-old time capsule in 2024, with vivid messages, pictures, and other communications from the past.
