The Matrix trilogy has always been rated as one of the best movie series of all time, so the anticipation behind the newest Matrix movie has stirred up conversation among movie enthusiasts and critics alike. After 18 years worth of anticipation, the film has certainly caught the eyes of many, and with certain leaks coming out, it is difficult to conclude whether this film will compare to the previous trilogy.

The original Matrix trilogy was directed by two sisters: Lana and Lilly Wachowski. However, for the fourth movie, Lilly has chosen to take a step back as she did not want to “go backwards” in her career. She claims that moving back into an already excellent trilogy is of no use and that she should rather focus on newer, innovative films. Lana Wachowski has since chosen to direct this film solo.

The plot currently remains hidden in order to preserve the anticipation. However, we will see Keanu Reeves return as the lead Neo and Carrie-Ann Moss as Trinity. This duo has always been a fan-favorite, so the hype surrounding the film is centered around these two actors in particular. As the Matrix movies are already some of the highest-rated sci-fi films of all time, this fourth movie carries significant weight as it will put an end to this legacy.

Although The Matrix 4 is a highly anticipated movie, fans and movie critics are questioning how the plot of the movie will tie back to the three previous movies. The third Matrix movie ended on a very conclusive note, in which the central evil was defeated, so the villain and plot of the fourth film still remain unclear. However, there is speculation that the villain of the first film, Agent Smith, will return as the next evil as his role has already been confirmed.

The Matrix 4 trailer was released on September 9th, however, it gave fans little to work with to understand the film in a holistic view. We see action scenes of Neo (Keanu Reeves) and Trinity (Carrie-Ann Moss), and we also see a repeat of the metaphor from the first film in which Neo must choose between the blue and red pills. Neo and Trinity are also much older, showing that much time has passed since the previous movie. We do see a return of the Oracle; however, it is still difficult to decipher what her role will be in the movie.

The release date is currently set for December 22nd and has 18 years worth of anticipation. It will be a movie that brings nostalgia for early 2000s movie enthusiasts, and also one that carries action, humor, romance, and tragedy. For fans that have already seen the original Matrix movies, it is easy to say that this film will most certainly be worth watching. Even if the plot and story don’t add up to the previous movies, the nostalgia and performances by the original actors will make for an enjoyable experience. However, for newer viewers, this will still be an enjoyable and entertaining movie with a unique and notable story.
