Homework is a pain in the butt, but extremely important for learning.
“I sometimes struggle focusing, depending on the subject,” says Meera Abubakr ‘29
Many people struggle from procrastination and loss of motivation. Peers and teachers can often give good advice.
“Meera Abubakr ‘29 says, “If you can’t focus, try taking a ten minute break.” Taking a break can help clear your mind.” She also states “If I don’t understand the topic I research and watch videos, I use Khan Academy.”
Dr. Oz, the seventh-grade life science teacher, gives the advice to start the assignment as soon as you can. He states, “Starting early really helps you understand the assignment because, if you ever run into any trouble understanding, it gives you time to ask the teacher questions.”
He also says listening carefully to instructions is very important, so that the homework is easier to do.
Meera Abubakr ‘29 suggests that music is a helpful tool while you work on assignments, but Mr. Drew, the sixth-grade math teacher, says it depends on what you are listening to.
He states, “Sometimes it can help calm us down so we can get to a mindset where we are ready to work but, other times it is not helpful. It also matters what type of music you listen to, if you’re listening to upbeat music, pop, rock, heavy metals, studies prove that those kinds of music are not helpful for your brain to focus because your brain focuses on the music more.”
He suggests “softer music, jazz, classical, instrumental, studies show that these can help you focus and stay calm.”
While homework can be annoying it can be done easier with the right kind of focus.
