Opinion: Squid Game is the New Must-Watch Show on Netflix

Squid Game (Netflix)

The new Korean drama Squid Game has already topped the charts. The show is about people in severe debt playing children’s games for a large sum of money, but there is a twist on how people get eliminated. Everything about the show is well done and it always keeps you on the edge of your seat.

“Debt to a cruel system is inescapable and dehumanizing, the show constantly reminds us. But beneath the hyper-violence, it also suggests that our obligations to other people can be a source of meaning, compassion, and –just maybe– salvation,” Morgan Ome from The Atlantic said about the show.

Upper school students should definitely consider checking the show out. Already, some students have taken a liking to it and recommended it. “The show is fantastic,” said Ethan Ledezma-Nichols, a sophomore at Barstow, about the show.

“It had great characters and a riveting plot. The director did a great job of making the characters realistic and relatable, and it evoked so many emotions,” James Knoficek said, another sophomore at Barstow, “I would definitely recommend people watch Squid Game.”

“I thought it was a very interesting show, loved the twist at the end; it was a very good surprise. It had a good comparison of people with money and without. I had to get over the cheese factor with the dubbed voices, but I got accustomed to it,” said Dr. Markely, though the dubs were certainly a sticking point for him. “The dubs were atrocious. It feels contrived, it doesn’t feel right. I got the impression that they put it through Google Translate. No uber negative things about, but if people struggle with goriness and graphic scenes then it would be a problem,” he continued.

Since Squid Game aired, it has already become the number one most popular show across the United States. It deserves that spot since the show has done everything correctly such as the acting and storyline. The characters in the show make it that much more enthralling since actors did such a good job of playing their roles.

The characters alone are a good motive to watch the show with their personalities and own backstories. While it may not be the most appropriate show for certain ages, those who can watch it definitely should. The show has tragedy and violence, but if viewers can withstand that, they should consider watching the show. Its creepy, child-like setting invokes a different feel than the traditional horror show.
