Preparing for Finals: Insights from Dr. Marien

If you’re struggling with finals and are looking for some advice, Dr. Marien offers guidance, and study tools!

As the semester draws to a close, students are entering one of the most critical times of the academic year: finals. These exams can feel daunting, but with the right approach and mindset, they can become an opportunity to showcase all the progress made over the past few months. To help students prepare Dr. Jenny Marien, the director of Upper School, shares advice on how to approach finals week with confidence and focus.

“Finals are about much more than testing knowledge,” Dr. Marien explains. “They’re a chance to demonstrate the skills you’ve built throughout the semester—skills like problem-solving, time management, and perseverance.” For many students, finals are not just about what happens in the classroom, but how they prepare outside of it. Planning ahead is one of the most critical steps in the process.

Dr. Marien emphasizes the importance of creating a study schedule. Instead of waiting until the last minute to cram, students should start their preparation early, breaking down material into smaller, more manageable sections. This approach not only makes the workload feel less overwhelming but allows for a deeper understanding of the material.

Students should also take advantage of the resources the school provides. “We offer so many tools to help students succeed, from review sessions with teachers to after-school tutoring,” says Dr. Marien. “If there’s a topic you’re struggling with, don’t hesitate to ask for help. Your teachers want to see you succeed and are here to support you.”

Beyond these resources, students can benefit from forming study groups with peers or using study aids like flashcards and practice exams to reinforce their knowledge.

However, preparation isn’t solely about hitting the books. Dr. Marien highlights the critical role of health and wellness during finals week. “It’s tempting to sacrifice sleep or skip meals when you’re stressed, but that’s a mistake,” she notes. “Sleep, nutrition, and exercise are essential for maintaining focus and retaining information.” A well-rested mind is better equipped to tackle tough exam questions, so students should aim for consistent sleep schedules, balanced meals, and even short breaks of physical activity to stay energized.

Organization is another key factor in successful finals preparation. Knowing the dates and times of your exams, keeping notes and materials in order, and setting clear goals for each study session can make a huge difference. “When you’re organized, you free up mental space to focus on the actual studying,” Dr. Marien explains. Tools like planners, study apps, or simple to-do lists can be game-changers for students managing multiple exams.

While finals can be stressful, managing that stress is just as important as mastering the material. Dr. Marien encourages students to practice mindfulness techniques, such as deep breathing or meditation, to stay calm and focused. “Taking short breaks during study sessions can also help refresh your mind,” she said. “Sometimes, stepping away from your work for a few minutes is the best way to regain clarity.”

Dr. Marien ends her advice with a powerful reminder: “You’ve worked hard all semester, and finals are just one more opportunity to show what you’ve learned. Trust in your preparation and believe in yourself. And remember, we’re all here to support you.”

As finals approach, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed, but Dr. Marien offers guidance for a roadmap to success. By planning ahead, using school resources, taking care of your health, staying organized, and managing stress, you can tackle finals with confidence. While the journey may be challenging, it’s also an opportunity to reflect on how far you’ve come and to finish the semester strong. Good luck to all students, you’ve got this!
