The girls have a bright future for high school so I wanted to shine a light on what they thought of this year’s season and the future.
The middle school girls all worked very hard and have improved tremendously over the course of the offseason. Lilly Simpson (‘28) said, “I’m playing on a volleyball team for MAVS.” Their determination and grit towards what they love is admirable to say the least.
This season flew by so fast and during that time, the girls had many moments to bond with each other. Izzy Hamblin (‘28) said, “I do wish this season lasted longer but it was very fun.”
Anna Ryan (‘28) stated, “I think it was a lot better than last year and the teammates were better.” Even through some tough losses, the girls always encouraged each other to try harder and never give up. Each and every girl brought something new to the court.
Many of the girls are planning to try out for the high school team. These girls will make an amazing addition to the team and hopefully they will have a chance to go to state. The team will continue to grow with more and more talent each year.
Every player on the team has a specific position they play. The positions are outside hitter, opposite hitter, setter, middle blocker, libero, and serving specialist. The outside hitters are the players that hit and block on the front left side of the court.
Opposite hitters, also known as right-side hitters are one of the most versatile because they are great at offense and defense. The setter is the control tower of the team’s offense. They get the second touch and set the ball to either the opposite or the outside hitter so they can make the attack.
Middle blockers are the players that play near the net and block the other team’s hitter. The libero is a back row defense specialist. A serving specialist is only subbed in to serve.
Many of the girls have a motto that keeps them going during a game. Maira Parson (‘27) said, “Just don’t be afraid to make aggressive mistakes.” While playing in a game the players need to keep focus but also have fun. Volleyball is a balance between work and play.
There are many different skills that these girls want to improve that will help their team. Lilly Simpson (‘28) stated, “I play a middle now, but I wanna switch to an outside so I can hit.” Every player knows how to play all the positions but most specializes in just one. Maira Parson (‘27) said, “I play right side and ds.” Volleyball is a sport that heavily relies on how strong the team’s bond is and how much they trust each other.
The girls accomplished a lot this year and worked very hard. They learned the importance of working together and communicating. Hopefully this makes you appreciate the sport a bit more and maybe even inspires you to want to play.
