The Spring Dance is an event that can bring out your inner dancing abilities and clear your mind of end of the year tests and finals.
The spring dance brings together the whole of the middle school to engage in singing, dancing, and fun activities at the end of the year. It is a great way to socialize with friends and meet people from other grades.
The second semester student council representatives have the important role of planning that year’s middle school dance. “We plan decorations, organize it, we figure out snacks and what students are going to bring, the type of music to bring to the DJ,” said Mrs. Tilema.
Unfortunately, many students who celebrate Ramadan were not able to attend the dance. Student council members are trying to figure out a better date for the dance next year so their fellow peers can participate in this fun Friday night gathering.
Every year the student council decides on the dance’s theme and how to decorate the gym. This year the theme of the dance was masquerade. The students have many different opinions about this. Ali Wood ‘27 said, “I felt like it was a good theme.” While Shreeya Iyer ‘28 voiced, “Only five people participated in the masquerade theme.” Having a set theme is hard to enforce and there is no guarantee that students will participate.
The theme isn’t all about student participation, however. Mrs. Tillema points out, “We have Christmas lights, masks, streamers, and posters. We have an array of things that we think could go with it…The student council reps bring students ideas to meetings and we write it on the board and vote on different ideas.”
The DJ was responsible for planning a couple fun contests and activities to have during the dance. Some of the activities included a limbo challenge, worm contest, and dance contest. There was also a place to take photos which was one of the students’ favorite things to do during the dance. The DJ made the dance more interesting and brought out competition between students.
All the students got dressed up so the gym was filled with every color of the rainbow and many different styles of dresses and suits. Juniper Sterrett ‘28 wore “a white dress with puffy sleeves and black Mary Jane heels,” while Shreeya Iyer ‘28 sported a, “red and glittery” dress with “a Kendra Scott necklace with black glittery heels.” The dance is an amazing way to express yourself and see how others express themselves.
Some students gave their feedback on what could make the dance an even better experience. Juniper Sterrett ‘28 stated, “I would change the music or have the 8th graders suggest more music.” Ally Wood ‘27 also said, “I would have wanted the DJ to add more activities.” These suggestions can make the future dances even better and more enjoyable.
The spring dance is always something to look forward to nearing the end of the school year. I hope that if you could not make it this year or decided not to come that you will next year because the dance is always a blast.
