Moon Knight is an American television series based on Marvel Comics that was created by Jeremy Slater. The main character, Steven Grant, discovers he has dissociative identity disorder and shares a body with mercenary Marc Spector. As enemies converge upon them, they must navigate their complex identities while being thrust into a deadly mystery among powerful gods of Egypt.

People have had overall positive reviews of the show with one twitter user saying, “I’ve watched the first 4 episodes of Moon Knight, it’s unlike anything we’ve seen before from the MCU [Marvel Cinematic Universe]. It’s a psychological thriller with a touch of Indiana Jones, it kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time. And Oscar Isaac delivers a mesmerizing performance.”

University Film Review, a movie review website for Marvel movies, also had good things to say about the series explaining, “Moon Knight is fantastic & Oscar Isaac is exceptional as the tormented Marc Spector. This is the Marvel show everyone is going to be talking about. Completely bonkers that leads with a haunting adventure. Marvel Studios has knocked it out of the park with its best show yet.”

These enthusiastic reviews are expected as Moon Knight is nothing like we have seen in the MCU to date. Oscar Isaac’s lead performance has also been praised. However, the show does have a few issues.

In the series, Isaac plays mercenary Marc Spector, gift shop employee Steven Grant, night-time vengeance dealer Moon Knight, and possibly New York cabbie Jake Lockley in Marvel’s first stab at a full supernatural superhero project in the MCU. Why all the identities? Well, Marc suffers from dissociative identity disorder, and therefore has a handful of identities to choose from when he’s fighting crime. He also has this psychic connection to Khonshu, the Egyptian moon god, who selects Marc to be his avatar on Earth in exchange for saving his life.

This sounds very confusing, and it will be for a while as the complex story unfolds. Often depicted as struggling with his mental health, the character is a lot for Marvel to tackle in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Die-hard Moon Knight fans have been waiting for an opportunity to see the Fist of Khonshu onscreen for years, and there have been some ideas. Back in 2017, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn told a fan on Twitter that he had “a great idea” for a Moon Knight movie, but simply didn’t have the time to pursue it.

If you are interested in the MCU and have some time to spare, Moon Knight is a great series to watch even if it requires some comfortability with confusion at first.
