When most Middle and Upper Schoolers in the Barstow School choose their electives, they worry about their teachers.

Coach Lucia Scott is the varsity debate coach and B-Line teacher. She also teaches the new 6th grade class Executive Functioning Skills. She is a very bubbly and colorful teacher that rarely ever gets mad.

B-Line and debate are extremely fun and interesting electives that students should definitely try out. If students are skeptical of how capable Coach Scott is, she stated that “This will be my 7th year at Barstow,” meaning she is very experienced.

Coach Scott actually unintentionally became a journalism teacher, “It was an accident.”

The person who originally taught B-Line ended up leaving and Barstow handed the job to her. Coach Scott ended up loving this job. Coach Scott came to Barstow because she was tapped by Dr. Linda Collier, the previous debate coach, when she retired. Mr. Gabe Cook moved up to take Dr. Collier’s position, and Coach Scott was hired based on Dr. Collier’s recommendation.

Coach Scott enjoys journaling as a hobby, and she is also extremely interested in the news. 

She would also enjoy teaching almost any other subject (“except math”), but she would be most interested in teaching English. 

Coach Scott’s grading style, “Depends on the class, but it’s all about making sure that students are actually emphasizing things I want them to emphasize, because hypothetically if there are thousands of points in a class, you could get a C by not doing any of the important stuff. In upper school I weight grades so that kids actually do have to go judge and give back to the community.”

I totally recommend trying B-Line or Debate as an elective if you’re interested in journaling or the news. Coach Scott is a very fun teacher and you get to learn many important life skills. Coach Scott pushes you and gets you extremely determined to conjure anything.
