The studio behind the iconic title franchise Grand Theft Auto has confirmed that the sixth installment in the blockbuster series is officially in development. The series was created by Dundee game creators at DMA Design studios, and through the many games and years, the franchise has made itself known as a critically acclaimed title. It has garnered a legendary reputation in the gaming scene as an action-adventure open world escapade set in fictional cities of Liberty City, Vice City, and San Andreas.
Recently the studio behind Rockstar Games responded to the many speculations about the game’s announcement with a tweet, “With the unprecedented longevity of GTA V, we know many of you have been asking us about a new entry in the Grand Theft Auto series,” and that “With every new project we embark on, our goal is always to significantly move beyond what we have previously delivered — and we are pleased to confirm that active development for the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series is well underway. We look forward to sharing more as soon as we are ready.”
Since its debut in 2013, Grand Theft Auto V has become one of the most popular video games in media history. Much of that success may be attributed to its several rereleases on next-generation platforms, essentially allowing Rockstar Games to double or even triple their sales.
Along with this, the launch of GTA Online resulted in the introduction of online multiplayer which helped Rockstar Games to milk the longevity of the game for nearly 10 years. Since there has been a lot of focus on the performance of GTA Online, many appear to recognize the uncertainty regarding the series’ future. After all, it’s been over a decade since a new Grand Theft Auto game was released, which is why it’s no surprise that fans of the series have been eagerly anticipating news about a future sequel.
Since there are not any set details about the future installment, there will be more speculation regarding the location of the upcoming setting of Grand Theft Auto. The majority of earlier games took place in fictitious replicas of major American cities such as Liberty City (New York City) and, more recently, Los Santos (Los Angeles).
Regarding a release date, Rockstar has not made any official statement. However, many analysts predict that the “great likelihood is that it’s still a long way off.” In January, analysts predicted that the next Grand Theft Auto game wouldn’t be out until sometime, “dropping it sometime between April 1, 2023, and March 31, 2024.”
Rockstar Games hasn’t revealed when or where the next Grand Theft Auto game will be released, but there are plenty of speculations that might hint at what we can anticipate from the upcoming GTA. Until then, for the Barstow students who love the franchise, all we can do is wait.
