After school on Friday, January 20th, the girls swim team participated in the Pirates Invitational, the largest competition of the season so far. With more than 10 schools in attendance, the team faced tough competition from swim powerhouses like Grain Valley High School and Kearney High School.

Even so, the team held its own, with many of the swimmers qualifying for the second round of competition the day after.

For example, Sydney Georgie ‘25 qualified for the 50 yd. Freestyle, and Alexandra Hunyh ‘24, Kiley Bourke ‘24, Sonya Shkuta ‘26, and Cam Westphal ‘25 all qualified for the freestyle relay.

The team won seventh place overall in the relay event, a great achievement for the young team.

The girls swim team was only brought back this year through efforts by captain Alexandra Hunyh and others on the team. After recruiting Ms. Alexa Taylor, a pre-Kindergarten teacher, as coach, the team started practicing at the North Overland Park Genesis.

The team hopes to attend at least one more meet this season, so be sure to check back for updates about the team’s success!
