First Days at Barstow

The experiences of first year students and teachers at the beginning of the school year.

Naeema Banday ’28, Addison Huff ’28, and Chloe Holmes ’28 are all new students this year.

New things can be uncomfortable, so we’re thrilled that our first year students and teachers feel so welcome these first few weeks. It’s important to see the perspective of new people to the school. This way, it’s possible for our returning members to contribute to the positivity by being kind, inclusive, and helpful.

One of our new teachers to Barstow this year is Mr. Max Lamb, the freshman history teacher, who’s excited to share his thoughts and ideas about the school year.

Mr. Lamb is the new freshman history teacher this year, and he’s been sending his daughters here since last year. He was already familiar with the environment of Barstow, but his first few weeks have really shown him a more broad perspective of what our school is really like.

So far, he’s had a really good time teaching at a new school. “My first few days at Barstow have been really good. I’ve enjoyed them tremendously, and I’m getting to know everybody.”

In addition to his enjoyment of the first few weeks, Mr. Lamb has a few goals in mind that will make the year successful. He hopes to lead a class that gives students the confidence and preparation they need to continue their studies as they progress through high school. He wants history to be an enjoyable class for the freshman.

Another goal of his is to work on building close bonds with his students. “Overall, I want to create a meaningful relationship with my students this year.”

Our new students have also had many great thoughts about school so far. They’ve been adjusting well by meeting new people and learning the things Barstow has to offer.

Addison Huff, a freshman student, has had nothing but positive things to say about her start of the school year! She’s had a great experience so far and has enjoyed meeting new people and getting to know the school environment.

Huff’s favorite sport is volleyball, and she’s on the varsity team at Barstow. She has also been active in the pep club, and has contributed many good ideas! She’s very excited to get involved in the school community this year.

Compared to her previous school, there have been a lot of changes. “The workload is definitely heavier, but the people are also just a lot nicer and more inclusive.” Huff expressed how her teachers have helped her understand the topics discussed in class, and how despite getting more work than she’s used to, she is able to get it done efficiently.

Overall, Huff’s had a great time at Barstow. She’s expecting a successful school year and is excited to continue trying new things and having fun.

The atmosphere at Barstow is great, thanks to all of our returning students and staff. Everyone has been so kind and helpful, making school an enjoyable place! The new faces to the community have felt so welcomed. We’re ready for a great school year!
