Fall Girls Basketball

It’s finally that time of the year. Fall clothes are trending, the leaves are turning, and of course it’s time for fall basketball. A favorite sport shared by many, basketball is a sport where a lot of people occupy their time. There are some students who have played basketball for a while and they have strong opinions about it.

“I love teamwork and how active you get to be, and having a fun way to exercise,” says Eden Grobel ‘30. Basketball is not only a fun sport, but also a great way to get in some exercise.

People get started in different ways. For some, their parents decided it was best, then the kids knew that it was instantly their favorite sport. Most people played on the middle school basketball team last year and are going to again. Some decided that since they love basketball so much, they started playing outside of school, “I just love the sport,” says Eden.

In fact, some people love basketball so much they have their own signature move. One example is called the “ 1, 2, 3 curby” used by Eden Grobel. “It is three steps, then you shoot, which is why it’s called ‘1, 2, 3 curby,'” she explains.

First, you dribble the ball to the free throw line, and you have to sprint. Second, you dribble the ball under your legs. Third, you pretend to shoot the ball to trick other players into thinking you are going to shoot, but you don’t. The “curby” step is shooting the ball.

Another example is called a “step back three.” It’s the exact same as the “1, 2, 3 curby” but without the under the leg dribble. This play is often used when in doubt or when it’s a last-minute tie.

A common favorite thing that people have is really focusing on games and playing as hard as they can. “You learn new experiences, you’re out of your zone. It’s really good to go out of your comfort zone and try new things,” says Imogene Gruber.

“It’s one of my favorite sports to play,” says Sebastian Johnson, “It’s really fun to get bigger on bigger defenders.” They also like shooting, scoring, and the teamwork involved.  The ballers have played in ranges of 1-3 years. Come out and support your Knights this basketball season!
