Since the winter months are up and coming, two middle schoolers explain how they stay fit.
As the winter season approaches, staying active and motivated can be challenging. Eddie Buckner ‘31 and Henry Roth ‘30Two local athletes, both who attend the Barstow school, share their favorite workout routines, tips, and strategies for maintaining physical and mental well-being during the cold.
“My favorite workout to do during the winter is playing basketball with friends,” says Eddie.
Henry prefers Pilates, though, “It’s usually Pilates for me.”
Buckner emphasizes the importance of staying fit through random exercises, such as hamstring stretches, and playing mini hoop basketball indoors on snow days. “I play basketball, and it’s fun to do the sport,” he adds.

Roth focuses on strength training and mobility exercises, utilizing the Block Training app, founded by an NBA player. “I use an app called Block Training, and an NBA person started it,” he explains.
Both athletes prioritize stretching, with Buckner favoring hamstring stretches. “My favorite stretch is hamstring stretches,” he says.
Buckner trains alone with his fellow teammates, while Roth works with a basketball coach. To stay motivated, Buckner reminds himself of potential victories in upcoming games. “I just think that nothing is stopping me next season, and we are going to win lots of games in both of my sports,” he confidently asserts.
Roth focuses on winning big tournaments, saying, “I try to remind myself that I could win a big tournament if I stay motivated.”

Buckner stresses the importance of exercising and eating well during winter, citing potential negative impacts on health if neglected. “If you don’t play a winter sport, be sure to exercise and eat well, because if you don’t, it will take a toll on your health,” he cautions.
Roth advises staying motivated without burning out. “Stay motivated, don’t burn yourself out,” he cautions.
Buckner swears by the Buffalo Cobb Salad from his favorite restaurant, The Peanut to keep protein levels up. “I eat my favorite, Buffalo Cobb salad from The Peanut; that keeps my protein up,” he reveals.
Roth emphasizes the importance of adequate sleep, aiming to go to bed early and wake up late. “I get sleep; I go to bed early and wake up late,” he shares.
Buckner is confident about his team’s prospects next season, aiming to win numerous games.
Roth prioritizes maintaining motivation, emphasizing the need for energy to sustain winter workouts. “Staying motivated to workout every day is key,” he emphasizes.
With Buckner and Henry’s valuable insights, the winter season becomes an opportunity to elevate fitness goals, foster resilience and emerge stronger and healthier.
