Middle school girls volleyball has an exciting season ahead.
Middle school volleyball is starting up again, and all players are so excited for the season and ready to play. Carly Ning and Coach Winzer are thrilled for the season.
“Forty girls are trying out for volleyball,” says coach Ning. Coach Winzer and Ning have been preparing and trying to make this the best season ever.
Coach Ning has played volleyball since she was in second grade, and she also played in highschool. She says that, “A winning percentage would be great but I really want girls to master skills they have been working on like serving, and getting three touches before going over the net.”
Volleyball is a very interesting and fun sport. It’s in the Olympics and it’s played all over the world. It’s so exciting that the sport is in the Barstow community, and it’s a great opportunity for girls to play a fun sport.
Volleyball is a team sport where you only use your hands, and your team can only touch the ball three times or less, and one person can’t touch the ball two times in a row.
Each team is trying to get to 25 points, and you get points when the ball hits the floor on the other team’s side, or if the other team hits the net or sends the ball out of bounds. Whoever gets the 25 points first wins the first set. A game consists of three sets and is decided by best two out of three. After the game you and your team high five your opponents and the referee.
The girls practice Tuesdays and Wednesdays 5:30pm-7:00pm in the varsity gym. At practice they work on passing, setting, spiking, and blocking. Coach Ning and coach Winzer make up fun and challenging drills for the girls to do every practice.
Coach Winzer is the volleyball coach for the 6th grade team, but she is also a PE teacher at Barstow for lots of different grades.
Coach Ning coaches the 7th and 8th grade team, she has also been a teacher for several years now at Barstow. Coach Nings favorite drill is called all around serving, which she said she would do with her team. Coach Ning always is willing to help people on a volleyball move that girls are struggling with, like serving and passing and tons more. That is what makes her a good coach.
Middle school volleyball is known for their loud and energetic spirit while cheering on their teammates. The team usually plays other small private schools. When it’s a home game, they will play in the varsity gym. The girls do tons of creative chants to motivate their team. Even if the team wins or loses, they are still happy because they had so much fun playing and being part of the team.
You should definitely check out one of the games, they are so fun and exciting. It’s also never too late, so any interested girls can email Carly Ning, and join in on the fun! The more the merrier! The girls and coach Ning and coach Winzer are so excited to get into the 2024 season!
