Kids are chatting, food is ready, tables are set; the Cultural Enrichment Festival is ready to begin. At the Cultural Enrichment Festival, hundreds of people gather to celebrate and share cultures. This colorful, diverse event helps build community. You can spot many people enjoying the wonderful food and performances.
“They started it because they thought the community needed [to celebrate] more diversity,” says Jahnavi Kakarala ’30. The Cultural Enrichment Festival wasn’t always a thing, however, Barstow started it to enhance diversity. It’s also a great way to earn extra credit! Ms. Ferren has an extra credit opportunity for all sixth graders who fill out their passport with stamps.
“It’s a pretty easy way to get extra credit. I remember I did it last year!” exclaims Kakarala ‘30.
Lots of kids enjoy getting their passports stamped as they roam around trying new food and learning about cultures. When kids walk in, they receive a little booklet in which they can get a stamp from each country, hence the name passport.
“The real pleasure I have is all the food. Oh my god, so much good food!” says Mr. Muhammad. There’s always an abundance of food, and something for everybody. Typically, people set out some culturally popular food for people to enjoy.
Some tables even offer cultural experiences. Last year, several students waited to get mehndi, or henna on their hands. Mendhi is a paste from the henna plant used to create temporary tattoos. Mehndi ceremonies are very popular in Indian and Muslim cultures, particularly before a wedding day.
“Last year, they thought a certain amount of people were going to show up, but then a lot more people showed up!” laughed Kakarala ‘30. This year, the Cultural Enrichment Festival had a big turnout too.
“I just think it’ll be a really fun time and I hope a lot of people come!” says Kakarala ‘30. It was an amazing time for all those who attended the Cultural Enrichment Festival. Mr. Muhammad and Jahnavi Kakarala hope to see you next year!
