Even while school was out of session, the basketball team continued practicing and playing in games.
The boys basketball season started off with a win against Ewing Marion Kauffman, a school located in KCMO. The team won 61-30 against their opponents, a good beginning of the period.
This season is especially important for the boys because of the myriad changes the team has faced in the preseason. For one, the boys have a new set of coaches, with Head Coach George Goode leading the charge.
“Coach Goode is a great coach. He knows the game really well, and has played at so many different levels of the sport. He takes all of his expertise and applies it really well to the high school level,” explains junior Aidan Lawlor ‘24
Additionally, the team lost a host of seniors after they graduated last year, meaning that the team has new leadership on the student side as well.
“Many of our current juniors and seniors have really stepped up to fill the shoes of the people we lost last year. They have been really good at helping the team out,” continues Lawlor.
All things considered, the team did exceptionally well over the break, winning 4 out of 7 games. The starting lineup did not really change, with juniors and seniors leading out of the gate.
“I really want to applaud Carson Matula this year for stepping up into a role that he is not used to filling, “ says Lawlor.
Some of the boys’ opponents included schools like Southeast, East, Heritage Christian, and Eudora, most of which were played in big tournament settings. For example, the team won against Eudora at the 810 Showcase, a neutral tournament that took place at Shawnee Mission Northwest.
There is no doubt that the team will continue to improve throughout the season. Check back for more updates about the basketball team’s performance this season!
