Barstow’s volleyball team played KC Lutheran on October 15th in an exciting and tension-filled match. They won 3-0 and took home the 17th victory of the year. This year, they placed first in the conference and seeded first in districts. The rankings are based on how many games they have lost and won so far in the season. Having tied one and lost six, Barstow remains one of the most serious competitors in this volleyball circuit.

The game began with an energetic warm-up from both sides. “These guys seem super determined,” says Karen Greenwood, mother of Zoe Greenwood (‘22) and Hayley Greenwood (‘24). “The bright orange jerseys [on the KC Lutheran players] seem super intimidating.”

She wasn’t the only one feeling the intensity. Barstow students filled the stands as people began. “I like watching the volleyball games,” says Chanelle Anderson (‘24). “It’s fun.” Anderson also plays basketball and runs track but chooses to show up to the games to show school spirit.

“We go to our first district game next week on Friday,” says senior Ysabelle Fears (’22). “We are just trying to play our hearts out. We’ve beaten Summit Christian before; we beat them in their home gym.”

“We would really like to have a bus full of people come in,” she continues.  “We have a really good chance of making it all the way to state.” But will people go to their games?

Some students are ambivalent. “I think I would go if I knew more about it,” says junior Allison Bodrick (‘23). “I’ve never really participated in volleyball, and I just don’t know enough about it.”

“After we beat Summit Christian  back to back, we hit a slump,” Fears stated. “We started getting it back when we went to five sets at Pembroke. Having people come to our games would really help get the energy up.”

Students should keep in mind that the games coming up are important. Both the district semi-final and district semi-championship are coming up, and seniors fear that they may not do as well as hoped. “It’s a year of lasts but a year of firsts for all the seniors,” Fears says. With little support from the student body, basketball players have taken it upon themselves to attend the volleyball games to provide encouragement. Barstow students should feel compelled to support their fellow students and come to volleyball games.
