Barstow recently had its homecoming dance for upper schoolers. The dance took place on February 12 at Ironhorse Golf Club, from eight to eleven P.M. Included at the dance were refreshments, couches and chairs for seating, an area for dancing, and an outdoor patio for anyone who wanted a breath of fresh air. The homecoming dance was the last of the activities for homecoming week. Many students showed up at the dance and enjoyed it.

“The dance was fun but I wish there was more to do,” said Barstow student Maya Theobald (‘24). “A lot of people don’t really like dancing, so different activities would have been nice like they did for the winter formal.”

The homecoming dance was a great way for the Barstow community to come together and show their appreciation for the school. For many students, this was the first homecoming dance they had attended. Due to Covid-19, last year the homecoming dance was replaced with a bingo night. With outside guests allowed, the dance was also a great way for the students at Barstow to feel connected with other students in Kansas and Missouri. The homecoming dance, as well as the other activities connected to homecoming this year, allows students the opportunity to step away from the stress of everyday life and have fun.

The dance was just one of many activities for homecoming this year. The week leading up to homecoming was spirit week, where students displayed their school spirit by dressing up as a certain theme each day. Following Spirit Week, Barstow basketball teams had their homecoming games. Barstow’s varsity girls won their homecoming game, but unfortunately both of the boys teams lost theirs, although the games’ scores were close. At halftime of the varsity boy’s basketball game, the homecoming attendants for each grade and homecoming king and queen were announced. Barstow’s homecoming queen was Maddie Bowman (‘22) and homecoming king was Max Parr (‘22). Students at Barstow also decorated the hallways in honor of homecoming.

Students of all years at high school attended the dance, and many people had fun. Helton Walker (‘24), states, “I think the dance turned out really well! I had lots of fun dressing up, dancing, and hanging out with all of my friends.” It was a lot of fun to have all of the Barstow community together at a dance outside of school.

Thanks to the hard work of everyone on Barstow’s students council, and all other students and faculty involved, students were able to experience a homecoming dance. If things continue going back to normal, the Barstow community will all be able to look forward to more dances in the future. Dances bring the Barstow community together, and allow students to interact with one another outside of school.
