Barstow’s Track Team Jumps Its Way to Victory and the End of the Season

The track season is nearing its end with a good record and high spirits.

Barstow’s track team has had a very memorable year. The team has grown both as a whole and as individuals. Clearly, the growth and great spirit showed through in their meets since they have never lost one. Roll the highlights!

“The season was good, it went really well. I did really well in the shot put category, I got fifth in conferences. Next year, I am excited for the 4×1 because there are going to be great sprinters,”  Chanelle Anderson (‘24) said.

“We are ending the regular season on a strong note. Five people qualified for sectionals and I think those five people are setting a good example for the team and representing Barstow well,” Coach Baldwin said.

The track team is quite big but only has 2 seniors. The seniors have risen up to the challenge of being the leaders and role models for the team and have set a good example for next year. While it is always sad when the seniors leave, next year will not have too much of a learning curve.

“Our team had a lot of adversity, but they are pretty resilient. Our seniors are excellent leaders, but I think the rest of our team will persevere when they graduate. Also for next year, we will have a bunch of good seniors that will help the team,” Coach explained.

The team’s record is quite good. They have no losses and only have ties and wins. While most of their season was tied, they were able to win where it mattered most: Districts. They have the chance to go on to sectionals and then state. The team will do amazing, no matter the outcome, and can always try again next year.

One rising star on the track team is Zoey Hrabe (‘24). So far, she broke Barstow’s old record for pole vaulting and continues to break her own records.

But like any other team, there are always skills that need to be improved, and the track team is no exception.

“For next year, I need to cut down my time in the 200 meters dash. As for the team needs to work on hand-offs, it’s okay but could be better,” Anderson commented.

“I would like us to work more as a team and I would like for our numbers to continue to increase. I think the overall commitment to the sport should also improve,” Coach Baldwin noted for next year.

Overall though, not too much to work on. The team is already a strong unit and will only improve.

This year was a fantastic season for the team and sets some high hopes for the next year.
