Barstow’s Varsity volleyball team closed out the season in districts, after coming up short to Summit Christian in their second game of the tournament. Throughout the season, the team spent much of their time learning to work with each other and build upon each other, and it paid off at this last tournament.
The volleyball team entered districts as the third seed and excelled in the district quarterfinals, beating Frontier Stem, the sixth seed team, 3-0. They then advanced to the semi-finals game where they lost against Summit Christian Academy, a team they lost to previously in the season.
Captain Anna Shapoval (‘23) explains, “We did much better in districts against Summit Christian than in the normal season, and the district game was much closer.” Summit Christian was the second seed in the bracket, so the game was a good matchup.
While they lost in the semi-finals, falling short of qualifying for state, Shapoval is proud of how the team played, “Volleyball districts went well. We had a good matchup and we came up short but the game demonstrated how much we grew over the season.”
This tournament was Anna Shapoval’s last tournament, and as the sole senior, she enjoyed the season. “I think this game was a solid end to our season. We were very emotional by the end of the game but we had fun and enjoyed ourselves.”
While this may have been the conclusion for this year, the team hopes to come back strong next year and build on everything they learned from this season.
