On Barstow’s soccer senior night, the team beat division rivals Summit Christian 5-0, redeeming themselves from a loss earlier this month.
In the team’s first game against Summit Christian earlier this month, the team was faced with fierce opposition, leading to penalty kicks and eventually a loss due to a missed Barstow PK. This game, however, demonstrated the immense talent of the Barstow team, even with injuries and sickness.
Starting the first half strong, senior Ian Koepp ‘23 scored the first goal. The game continued with junior Tyler Mcneive ‘24 scoring the next.
During halftime, the team walked across the field while the senior players met with their parents on the other side. Many pictures were taken of the players, with their parents, fellow teammates, and some other students.
Seniors George Colombo, Ian Koepp, Andrew Lang, JP Moore, Alex David, and Devarshi Desai were all instrumental in making the team a success. Colombo, Koepp, and Lang are also team captains this year, illustrating their immense dedication to the team.
Once the team got back on the field, Coach Scott Huppe made the decision to sub in JV players. By doing so, Coach Huppe made sure varsity players did not get injured, or rest players who had already played. For example, Eli Zeldin, Alex Norman, and Mischa Shkuta ‘25 were all subbed in for the second half, much to the delight of the student section.
In the second half, Barstow scored three goals, one of which by Zeldin, who was cheered on excitedly by both the students and his fellow players.
After the game, Zeldin remarked that, “You know I thought I missed it at first, but I’m glad I recovered it. I am excited that I finally got to do something good for the team.”
Other standout players included senior Alex David, Devarshi Desai, and JP Moore ‘23, who played for the entirety of the game. Moore, the goalkeeper, took the spot of junior Alex Hart for senior night and did not let the other team score once.
This game was the team’s last game of the regular season, as they start their Districts ascent today. Be sure to wish the boys good luck in the playoffs!
