Four brand new iPhone 13 models, the iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 13 Mini, and iPhone 13 Pro Max, were released on September 14, 2021, during Apple’s huge digital event. Right before the launch, on September 13, news sources and companies leaked rumors surrounding the iPhone 13 such as color options, improved battery life, and improved Night Mode. The breakthrough iPhone 13 features have been confirmed since then.
“Our customers rely on the iPhone every day, which is why we’ve made iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini more powerful, more capable, and more fun to use,” says Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing.
He continues with “both phones have beautiful designs, industry-leading performance, and advanced camera systems with impressive computational photography features, all with incredible durability, water resistance, and a big jump in battery life to ensure customers can depend on their iPhone when they need it. All of this, tightly integrated with iOS 15 and with privacy built-in, make iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini an unbeatable choice.”
Apple designed the iPhone 13 to have virtually no impact on the environment and use safe, recycled materials. Apple has also started using 95% recycled wood fiber and less plastic for packaging. If Barstow students want to contribute to Apple’s recycled materials, students can trade in their old phones when they get a new iPhone.
The iPhone 13 is the first Apple product to use only recycled gold for the logic board. They are striving for 100% recycled materials and to reduce their contribution to climate change. Apple will focus on producing energy-efficient products from renewable or recycled materials with renewable energy.
What makes the new Apple phone different from the rest is its amazing camera quality. The iPhone 13 offers a better Night Mode, so people can now take pictures of the night sky without blurring the stars. This is a huge step up for astrophotographers, as they no longer need high-tech photography cameras for one simple shot of the sky. This feature also isn’t just for professionals; now anyone here at Barstow can take better pictures of the stars.
Night mode also helps people take photos in the dark without flash because it has an AI brighten the pictures. The new cameras help take photos in dim lighting. On top of taking quality photos in the dark, it can add light to already taken photos. It adds light automatically if there is dim lighting. Apple states that the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Mini have the company’s “most advanced dual-camera system ever” and the 13 Pro and Pro Max have “our three most powerful cameras ever.”
Consumers voted in a poll that better battery life would encourage them to buy the next iPhone, which Apple delivered on. The iPhone 13 provides an extra two and a half hours of battery life compared to the already impressive battery life in the iPhone 12. The battery life on the iPhone 13 Pro is 22 hours and the iPhone 13 Pro Max has up to 28 hours, or long enough forgetting your charger at home is a concern of the past.
On top of the upgraded battery life, Apple has introduced larger storage. The iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini have the normal options of 128, 256, and 512 gigabytes of storage, but the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max have 1 terabyte of storage. The 1TB of storage is mainly for those who are interested in videography because it can hold up to 500 hours of high-definition videos.
Along with better storage and battery life, the iPhone 13 features a better smartphone chip. Apple argues that they have the best smartphone chip, the A15. It can do more tasks more efficiently. “A15 Bionic is much faster than the competition, delivering more performance and better power efficiency, making everything even more fluid in the iPhone 13 lineup,” Apple said about the chip.
A large complaint from iPhone users is that the phones since the iPhone X have a large notch at the top of the screen, creating an eyesore. Now, the notch has decreased in size by 20%. The size of the new iPhones is thicker and denser than the older phones, but at least the notch size went down.
The new iOS update, iOS 15, has made FaceTime calls seem more natural with the new feature, Shareplay, which lets people share screens to watch movies or listen to music. iOS 15 also will help users focus on some new notification settings. It has redesigned apps like Weather and Wallet. The Weather app has full-screen maps and Wallet includes ID cards and home keys. Searching with Safari has also become easier with a new design for the tab bar and Tab Groups.
Apple has also added on to the list of colors the iPhone comes in. It can come in standard midnight black, starlight white, product red, pink, blue, graphite, sierra blue, silver, and gold. Consumers have been asking for a pink (not rose gold) iPhone and Apple finally created one. The new color option for this year is the sierra blue which is a more faded version of the normal blue.
So, given all of the new features that the iPhone 13 offers, Apple hopes to attract new and old Apple users. All of the rumors before the iPhone event have been confirmed, like improved Night Mode, longer battery life, and new colors. With its truly breakthrough technology, Barstow students can greatly benefit from the brand new iPhone 13.
