The Apple Car, also known as the iCar, has been in development for decades. Originally called Project Titan, the iCar is said to be Tesla’s biggest competitor. A lot of Apple fans are enthusiastic about the product and are eager to know more about the vehicle. 

Although Apple initially tried to keep this project secret, this effort quickly failed. Apple hired many Tesla engineers to work on the project throughout the years, as Tesla is the leading example of electric vehicles. As more information becomes public, people are speculating a launch by 2024. One of the most significant attributes of this car is its self-driving feature. Tesla uses sensors to detect objects and create an AI perspective of the cars surrounding, but Apple has other ideas for its car.

Lidar, which stands for light detection and ranging, is an alternative for self-driving cars. While companies such as Tesla depend on regular sensors and artificial intelligence, many other companies believe that lidar is the answer. 

While Tesla CEO Elon Musk may be skeptical, Apple sees this new technology as the path forward for self-driving cars. Lidar sends lasers that bounce off objects to build a 3D model of the car’s surroundings. Several corporations such as MicroVision and Lazr are creating such technologies to sell to car companies.
