A Captivating New Sound: Barstow’s Orchestra

“I believe music gives us the avenue to explore.” – Dr. Elizabeth Birger

The orchestra program at Barstow is a wonderful and constantly developing program. Barstow’s orchestra was just recently started in 2023, It gives each student an opportunity to increase creativity, explore history, and have fun. The orchestra is currently taught by the amazing vocal and instrumental teacher; Dr. Elizabeth Birger.

Dr. Birger states, “We get to explore all of humankind and the way it has evolved since the very first time an instrument was created and since the voice was used.”

Having at least some experience in music can greatly improve both your critical thinking and also your creativity. Playing an instrument, such a string instrument, can also improve your fine motor skills. And this can all happen while study humanity and literature of the past and present.

“It’s a [more fun] experience working with a large range of age groups than just [people my own age],” Zahra Khumri ‘29 said.

Barstow’s Orchestra currently comprises two levels, a beginners group and an intermediate group. Both the levels of orchestra are a mix of both Upper and Lower School. This becomes a very unique learning experience for students because it gives them the chance to work with many different people with many different personalities, while also progressing at their own pace.

Yair Horesh ‘29, a cellist, stated, “I would entirely encourage [my classmates] to join [orchestra]. It’s a good experience; you get to learn music, play instruments, and also you get to hang out with friends.” Horesh enjoys spending time in class with the rest of the cello section while working hard to improve his own skills.

Along with friends, an interested student can get the chance to learn about different cultures, literature, and composers throughout history. This unique blend of knowledge can give you a deeper understanding of the past, art, and the people around you. Dr. Birger believes that “music and the arts in general are a way for people to explore humanity”

Barstow’s orchestra can and will provide students across both Upper and Middle school to make friends, have fun, and gain a vast amount of knowledge through playing an instrument. It’s never too late to join in on this exciting, musical experience!
