Barstow’s current Senior Class paired up with Kindergarten buddies for a scavenger hunt and to continue a lasting Barstow tradition.
“There it is! Now let’s take a photo!” This quote could be heard throughout the halls of all of the Barstow School on September 21st. The cause of this seemingly endless train of joyous selfies and timer photos was the Kindergarten-Senior Buddies day.
This tradition, as described by Senior Dean Matt Thurman, is one of the things that makes Barstow exceptional, “I think it’s really unique to Barstow to be honest. To have this intermingling of the oldest students at Barstow with some of the youngest is truly one of a kind. Barstow is really full of these kinds of traditions too that date back years and years. I think students should without question keep doing the Senior-Kindergarten buddies for the foreseeable future.”
Barstow students, of any age, find themselves in a special situation. Regardless of what grade you might be in, the odds are you will get the chance to participate in one-of-a-kind traditions at some point in the year. Whether it only be as a spectator or as an involved participant, the opportunity to be a part of the various events that occur yearly is a privilege that should not be taken for granted. The Kindergarten-Senior Buddies events are a great example of this.
During the event, each pair of one senior and one Kindergartener was given a list of about 5 locations. The assigned task was to locate and visit each place on campus, and then take a photo of both students in front of the landmark. Some of the assigned spots included the Hall of Champions, the Barstow Garden, Senior Circle, the BTVN Room, the Barstow Knight Mascot, and the portrait of Mary Barstow.
Barstow Senior and B-Line writer Faizan Khalid ‘22 shared his thoughts about the activity, “I thought it was interesting to experience the dynamic between the Seniors and the Kindergartener, and was a nice change of pace during college app season. My favorite place was the Senior Circle where we had to skip around the circle twice prior to taking the photo. That seemed silly but was actually really fun!”
This Senior-Kindergarten Buddy Day was the first of many. Over the course of the rest of the school year, there will be a handful of more events. As one of Barstow’s countless special traditions, Kindergarten-Senior buddies is one that the Barstow community should be glad to have back.
